Lil Wayne, Prince, More Set To Attend Clive Davis' Grammy Party
Annual pre-Grammy gala rumored to have performances by Ke$ha, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson.
The Grammy Awards are about to go down on Sunday, but the night before the Grammy Awards is when the artists famously let loose and watch some headline-making performances take place at the pre-Grammy gala hosted every year by longtime Sony-BMG exec and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Clive Davis. In the past, Davis has launched new artists, re-launched careers and generally made a splash at the yearly shindig.
As usual, exactly who will be performing at this year's show is unconfirmed, but in years prior Whitney Houston relaunched her career at the bash, and the party has served as a kind of debutante ball for current superstars like Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, Fantasia and Leona Lewis. This year, everyone from Prince to the Jonas Brothers to Mary J. Blige has been rumored to be sitting in a ballroom at the Beverly Hilton Hotel when the party kicks off on Saturday night. And, it's rumored that Hudson, Ke$ha, Carrie Underwood and Maxwell may grace the stage.
"Well, you don't upstage a previous year but you really have the criteria to say, 'Why is it the hottest ticket in town?' Because every year come up with a few surprises," Davis told MTV News on Thursday about the party. "Every year we come up with a few duet possibilities, and you see artists perform together that you've never seen before and you never will see again. I remember from the past Lou Reed with Rod Stewart, or seeing Aretha [Franklin] with Alicia Keys. Hopefully this year we've got a lot of special events and special artists performing and hopefully it will be memorable." Davis did say that Carlos Santana and Rob Thomas, who scored a huge hit in 2000 with "Smooth," will team up for a cover of Cream's classic "Sunshine of Your Love."
Davis said that a lot of celebs who don't attend the Grammys still attend the party. "Somehow, people are flying in that don't go to the Grammys, but they are going to the pre-Grammy gala," he said. "And that guest list has everyone who's nominated in a key category is obviously going to be there.
"So whether it's new artists like Keri Hilson or established artists like Tony Bennett or Sheryl Crow breaking bread, that's the place to be," he continued. "And that's where they will see it in an intimate ballroom and have the chance to see artists celebrate music. So every year Jay-Z is there and Russell Simmons and Puffy, and Lil Wayne this year, and Prince comes back."
Santana, Rob Thomas, Mary J, Prince Set for All Star Party
Clive Davis's annual pre-Grammy shindig is my favorite party of the year. It's the best of the season, a tie maybe with Vanity Fair's Oscar party. Everyone in Hollywood wants to be in the Beverly Hilton Hotel ballroom this Saturday night. Not all of them will make it.
Yesterday I spent party of the morning observing while Clive did interviews and pre-press with Harry Connick, Jr. Harry is very funny, and the duo made for a good team as all the shows like “Access Hollywood” and “ET” got a crack at them.
What I can tell you exclusively is that Mary J. Blige as well as the Black Eyed Peas will perform for Universal Music's Doug Morris, who's being honored for his Lifetime Achievement by the Grammys at this party. Morris, like Clive, is one of the last real music men. His UMG is a towering success.
Also set for performances are Jennifer Hudson, Kesha, and Carrie Underwood, and Maxwell.
But the big excitement will be the return of Carlos Santana with matchbox twenty star Rob Thomas. They're set to perform their new cover version of Eric Clapton's “Sunshine of Your Love.” It's from the forthcoming Santana album in which the guitar hero “Santana-izes” a dozen classics with guest vocalists. Here's hoping Carlos and Rob will also do their big hit, “Smooth,” and maybe Rob's current hit, “Someday.”
My colleagues at Billboard, by the way, have just cited Rob for having the most #1 Hot Adult Contemporay hits. The infectious “Someday” is now headed for the pop charts.
As for Clive's guests, they'll run the gamut from NARAS chief Neil Portnow to Jane Fonda and Richard Perry, Sheryl Crow, the Jonas Brothers, Jackie Collins, Berry Gordy, Quincy Jones, and the Kings of Leon. That's just a taste of who's coming. There's also going to be a tribute to a BIG SUPERSTAR who I don't think has ever attended Clive's soiree. It's a surprise! If I revealed the name in advance, who knows what would happen?
