Whitney Houston will talk, but no substance

Whitney Houston is ready to talk about her seven-year exile from recording — but nobody better bring up drugs!

With her new album due out Sept. 1, Houston's handlers are getting requests from everybody in the entertainment media for interviews with the reclusive 45-year-old diva.

So who will get the first sit-downs? Apparently, the people who play ball.

“They only want to let her talk to journalists who'll agree not to ask about her substance abuse,” an insider tells us.

A rep for Houston calls speculation on any PR plans “premature. Nothing has been set.” But we hear the edict goes for the TV morning shows, which are all angling to get her to perform live. “The deal is, if they want her, then Matt Lauer, Diane Sawyer or whoever isn't supposed to ask her tough questions,” says the source. Good luck with that.

Elsewhere in the biz:

Shakira's rep is dismissing talk that she's ready to jump from Epic. Members of her camp are said to have been quietly letting rival execs know “she's feeling neglected” by Epic management, according to a source. Last year, the multiplatinum Colombian siren signed a tour deal with Live Nation reportedly worth $70 million. But her recording rights would be available after she delivers two albums to Epic. “Not true,” says Shakira's publicist. “She's very happy at Epic.”

Axl Rose has been having mood swings. The Guns N' Roses front man, an admitted manic-depressive, has fired and rehired famed manager Irving Azoff at least three times in the last five weeks, according to a source. The reclusive rocker is said to be resisting Azoff's pleas to try to revive sales of the band's recent album, “Chinese Democracy.” “Axl doesn't want anything to do with it,” says the insider. “He won't come out of his house.”

A source close to Azoff admits, “Axl is Axl. People get hired and fired all the time in this business.”

But Azoff's rep says that, as of last week, he and Rose are talking again: “We're in daily contact with Axl, and we look forward to continuing to support him and Guns N' Roses.”

Marc Anthony wants to give himself a musical makeover. While he remains a huge star in Latin music, friends say he's tired of American audiences thinking of him as Mr. Jennifer Lopez. Word is he wants to cross over and reinvent himself as a crooner in the style of Michael Bublé or Harry Connick.

Anthony's rep says he has been talking about cutting a disk of American standards, but he’s currently working on a Spanish pop/ballad album called “Iconos.”
